Wanted: Cheap Kitchen Chalkboard

For the longest time I have wanted a big chalkboard in my kitchen. They seem so fun, so retro, so French Bistro. But, alas, it is not meant to be since the price tags on these little beauties are astronomical. I have set out to find a super cheap way of doing this that doesn't involve nail guns or saws or measuring headaches at Lowes. I have an idea, which may or may not pan out. We shall see. Until then I'll just be satisfied with Pottery Barn's inspiring photos (I would be remiss not to mention that this little beauty of a chalkboard is $149.00 plus tax AND shipping). I love having a mission.

Well, let me tell you what I did. I had an old mirror with wood frame sitting around. I painted the frame black and bought chalkboard paint and painted right over the mirror with several coats. Worked like a charm. That's been 3 or 4 years ago. I love mine.

I found a few on eBay. This one is cute, but it's not a real antique, and it's $30.

Of course, you probably prefer making your own anyway, crafty lady.

If you have a panelled door in your kitchen, just paint one of the panels black and voila! Hang a rustic (not rusted) nail and hang a little metal pail on it and fill it with chalk. I did this a few houses ago, and it worked great. We always write our note to Santa on our chalkboard...

There is a VERY cheap way of doing this nowadays. It is called "chalkboard paint" and they sell it at both Lowes and Home Depot. Paint the wall with it, then nail trim from the same home supply store onto the wall surrounding the paint, or rather, framing your square of chalkboard paint and there ya go!

I took a giant 5x4 foot mirror that had a frame around it. It had been in my garage for 3 yrs. I painted the frame white and the mirror with chalkboard paint. voila!!! gorgeous. I will post pictures here http://proverbswifeandmomma.blogspot.com this week.

Also, I took an old framed poster (2x3) in my sons room and did the same.

Try the thrift stores too. This project shouldnt cost you more than a few dollars plus the paint.
