New Bird and An Ouch

I spied this little bird planter recently and fell in love with it. I fell in love with it even more when I spied the $3 price tag on the bottom. It reminded me of something from Anthropologie, except without the "holy smokes I cant pay my mortgage now" price tag.

And I've also discovered that I'm physically falling apart.

I walk everyday on my lunch hour at a nearby gym. One solid hour of brisk walking, iPod music blaring, a spritz of Coconut Lime Verbena body spray afterwards so I don't smell like "recess" when I go back to work. It's really turned into a habit that I love, if for no other reason than the stress relief. It truly makes the last few hours of the workday fly by. Last week I started doing some light arm weights and a few sit ups.

So last week I noticed that my lungs hurt when I took deep breaths. Not an overall hurt, but especially on my right side. Day one passed, it still hurt.

I said to Matt, "Gosh, the right side of my chest hurts."

Day two passed, it felt worse.

I said to Matt, "Ow! This really hurts."

Day three passed, I was popping Advil every four hours.

I said to Matt, "OK, something is really wrong! I need x-rays! I need a doctor!"

Matt paused midchew (we were at dinner) and said in a very calm, deadpan voice, "You don't need a doctor. You need to give those sit ups a rest... you've pulled a muscle."

Old lady town right here. I was so mad that I stopped doing the sit ups all together.. and guess what. Yep, no more pain. At least I have a sweet new bird planter to console me, because I certainly cant look forward to being consoled by a six pack of ab muscles.

Thats too funny!

I have heard that sit ups are actually bad for you. Like you can damage or back or something? I don't remember. I just filed that away under "Do No Do". :)

I'm glad we're in the same boat. I'm falling apart too! :*( Let's be miserable together...k?

Wow,I am impressed! You started full force. My husband would say Hon, you've got to start out slow, and build up to it. Do the walking, next week add one more thing (perhaps not quite as many sit ups)then add some upper body exercises, then alternate. I am good at giving the advice, now I've just got to do it. I am on week one with the walking AGAIN! You hang in there, we can do this thing and so can I and we will feel much better for it. Have a great day! Jackie (by the way the bird planter is perfect)

OK girls, you all are too YOUNG to fall apart, that doesn't really happen until you are my age. Jackie

OMG...that is too funny. I love to walk....I live on gravel roads....walking makes ankles hurt....I hate driving into town to find pavement for walking....so, I'm sitting here giving my fingers the best workout EVER!!!

Muscles come and go, bird planters are forever.

I think about exercising sometimes. That's usually as far as I get. :)

Megan said...

HAHAHAHA! That made my morning!

Yes, give them a rest, then go and buy a balance ball and do your sit ups on it!

I'm a massage therapist, and I know all about proper body alignment, and you can't get better than a balance ball for ab work. You can also get a good video to give you other ideas.

and LOVE LOVE the bird planter!!!

This is why I think exercising with a remote control is best. You can switch it from hand to hand (exercise). If you drop it on the floor you have to pick it up (more exercise). Walking to the kitchen for a snack (exercise). Get my point. I'm pleasantly plump, happy, and injury free!

Thank goodness for the bird planter! I love to get things to compensate for things I can't do, won't do and of course, will never do......I can always justify a good deal somehow!!!

Yep, proof that sit-ups are indeed bad for you. I have said it all along :) Love the planter!

your Recess comment was hilarious. That's what my car smells like right after I pick up my boys from school.....LOL

Aw hell...doesn't it suck when your body doesn't want to cooperate with what your are supposed to be doing...LOL...The planter is cute...you got that at least..

Six pack abs? Mech. My goal is a belly dancer's tummy. The ones who dance all the time and are toned. Think, the girls from Shimmy.

Michelle said...

You are so funny!! I too am falling apart. New aches every day. It's really sad to get old.

ashpags said...

Oh no! That stinks! Maybe could you do reverse sit-ups, where you lie on your back and bring your knees to your chest? They're supposed to be easier on your back. Or you could do some yoga poses to work your core. They won't give you a six-pack, but they will give you a strong core. Good luck! =)

Leah said...

sweet score with the planter!

and. um. sorry about your sore pulled muscles.

i have noticed i know hold onto the car door and pull myself out of it instead of using leg muscles to just stand up.

{is it ironic that part of the word verification was 'jog'?}

I have been "wanting" to get back in shapes for months but its so hard to make time for it... And then if I do ever exercise I have the same problem you do, aches and paines and feeling like I am 80 years old! Glad to hear I'm not the only one...

Way to go on walking during your lunch break - what a great idea!

Isn't it amazing how happy one lil' bird can make ya?

I had a similar experience with my back once. Too much Y-scupt class for me.

And side note, just why does everything at Anthropologie have to be SO expensive, but make me swoon so much?

I love your bowls! They are so cute!
Maybe I should start walking on my lunch break....

i probably would have gone to the emergency room thinking it was a collapsed lung.
aren't you thankful for laid back men who keep us in check?

Liz...you are toooo funny! I too, am falling apart. I've said on many occasions that I wish I could just trade my body in for a newly improved model!

Love the bird planter!

Matt sounds like my husband! And yes, I too am falling apart :) Coconut Lime Verbena is my favorite! My husband got it for me because it reminded him of our honeymoon.

Liz, first of all, is that some class of Nintendo on your TV that I see beyond your gorgeous new bird friend? I think yes. High five for old school video games. And I love the idea of walking at lunch, but this brings me to my most important question: when do you have time to EAT?!

alice said...

great find, love the bird planter.
I joined the gym about 6 weeks ago, so far it's not working.... guess I need to actually go. I did have good intentions in the beginning.
Glad you figured it out, but don't give up.

Myra said...

Oh yeah. I hear you. I do 30 brisk walking minutes on the treadmill, plus light leg and arm weights 5 days a week. Rocky hears me sigh every night because something new is hurting. My right bicep last night, my knees the night before. But think of the satisfaction of telling everyone, "I work out every day!"

Renna said...

Liz, you crack me up! ;-Þ

I love the bird planter, says someone who's nuts over all things bird!

Sharon said...

Good for you walking an hour every day! Awesome. Too bad about the pulled muscle, I hope you heal up quickly. I like the little bird planter, he is fun and he looks perfect sitting with your vantastic vintage bowls.

Hugs, Sharon

Tanya said...

I've had pulled muscles before that feel like you are having a heart attack..it's scary and very annoying.

I really like your bowls and the bird too!

Megan said...

It's hard getting into a routine of working out, espeically when you add something new to the mix! Don't you just LOVE men telling us what they think instead of sugar coating something to make us feel better!? :)

Hey Liz....I was at http://www.yesterdayscountryandprimdecor.com/catalog.php?category=1

You've got to check out her Halloween signs.....oh my, they are sooooo up your Halloween fetish alley.

I love the Wicked Witch Inn....welcome my little pretties....oh so cute. Just thought of you when I saw them....I don't even know this lady.

My husband would say the same thing! He thinks I'm a hypochondriac!

Love the birdy! Are you going to put anything in it?

Welcome to Old Lady Town, my dear!
I'm a long time resident.
Just pull up a chair and let's rock for a while! Or on second thought, let's take our walkers and go shopping! After seeing that bird, I want to tag along with you!

You're so funny!:)

That "so I don't smell like recess" comment made me laugh out loud.:)

Don't feel bad though; inexpensive and chic bird planters are way more satisfying than sit ups.;)

Good for you for walking! At least you're doing something for you! Sorry that you had to cut out the sit-ups, but maybe in a week or so you can pick them back up. Love that planter, and the price is just perfect!

Liz, I love your little snippets. And those aqua planters...oooh, I'm loving those. I'm going to be on the hunt for a few more of those myself.

Good for you for exercising...it's really the best anti-aging secret out there. It's part of my lifestyle too.

I went through something like this recently too. Except with me it was being at the computer too much which is just plain cruel. I thought I was dying. I just needed to relax my shoulders and take a deep breath now and again. Sorry that your ab 6 pack dreams are over. They are overrated anyways.

Eloise said...

That little bird is too cute! I love birds, and he definitely looks like he cost more than $3. Maybe you have a calling as a buyer for Anthropologie.

Courtney said...

Okay, how popular is your blog? 52 comments! 36 comments! 257 comments! Well, maybe I exaggerated with that last number! I'm lucky if anyone comments on mine! You should feel loved!

Anyways, last summer I was doing sit-ups and they did help a lot. I was also working out at Curves 5 days a week. I've gotta get back on that....in a few weeks.

Belle said...

The little bird DOES look like something from Anthropologie. Why am I not ever lucky enought to find a deal like that. Try reverse crunches where you pull your knees up toward your chest rather than sitting up. It makes it a lot easier on the back.

Bee said...

Amen to the body falling apart thing, sister...

And don't feel bad, every time a friend of mine's trainer increases her weights, she ends up going to the ER with chest pains...

Exercise is highly overrated! I love your bowls!

Love the little bird! It does look like something from Anthro.

You're an a-b-s-o-l-u-t-e JOY! That story reminds me of when we lived in(my hometown) Southern Cal. My hubby came home from work one day...white as a ghost gasping for air, complaining of the same symptoms you described. I (with the same stare your hubby gave& probably in mid chew too) replied oh, that's just "smog Lung" "it'll pass"(only to return on smog alert days) needless to say within a months time we were transfered to (his home) Vancouver Washington and we've lived "smog lung" free for 26 years!
I'm sure your cute bird planter will soothe all your aches and pains.
I'm the new kid on the blog block,so please come visit!

Have a*Sweet*Day!

HA! My husband is always having "incidents" like that. He insists he is on his death bed from some dreaded disease and lo and behold he did it to himself by exercising! LOL!

Of course, I shouldn't be snickering. I injured myself wearing high heels and walking up and down stairs at my daughter's wedding. {eh hem. clearing throat and slinking away in humiliation}

Christy said...

Six packs are overrated. Bird planters, however? Don't get nearly the recognition they deserve. I love her!

Podso said...

You're too young to be falling apart--but do take it easy! You sound like me--full speed ahead! I love your little bird.

Lorilee said...

My aches and pains are how I know that I am still alive!haha! I joined a clogging group for my exercise! Dancing for fun doesn't seem like as much work as a treadmill! The green bowls on the top shelf caught my eye! The bird IS cute too!

Lorilee

You are NOT old -- you just tried to do too much too soon.
I'm glad Matt was able to diagnose your pain. You would have been embarrassed if you had gone to the doctor and said, "It hurts when I do that." And he would have said, "Then stop doing that."

Cute bird! Anthropologie is da devil girl. I want to eat their candles they smell so yummy, but $16 bucks? Happy to hear you discovered the root of your pain..keep up the good work. You'll be skinny minny in no time!

Linda said...

Yeah, situps are the worst. I was told to do stomach exercises to help my back but I take it easy on the situps.

Amber said...

That's happened to me before too...at least you have a good reason not to do sit ups for a while. ;)

Cowgirl said...

I hate sit ups, and feel your pain!

By the way the bird planter is cute... but I love the little blackbird pie bird at the bottom of your first picture! My grannie had one just like that and her pies were fabulous!

I love the bird planter. Your hubby is right. Sit-ups are bad things.

Tammy said...

hahaha! your post made me laugh. 'smell like 'recess'' - I totally got the idea. And your husband, such a guy. Your description dead-on. And, you know, he totally heard you day 1, 2 and 3, and finally, took time out (or it occurred to him that, hey, she really hasn't a clue) to mention what HE knew. So funny.

Ms. Math said...

You are hilarious! I tried getting back into doing sit-ups this summer. I did them one day and remembered why I stopped in the first place.

Your bird planter is adorable!

Rosemary said...

I have done that before too!!
It hurts!!
Give it a rest. Walking is great though, I walk every morning.

That is pretty hysterical.
