December Morning Breakfast, With a Side of Pinecones

I’ve started getting up a little earlier in the mornings. And it takes a beast of an effort. I start by smacking the alarm clock repeatedly and muttering a string of border-line bad words. Not the super bad ones, just the kind that used to make mom threaten the bar of soap, but not actually give it. Like ‘crap’ and ‘son of ughhh…” In actuality I only ever ‘got the soap’ once. I was in the first grade and thought that Harve Presnell’s use of the D word in The Unsinkable Molly Brown was quite masterful. So I tried it out on the play ground, a little boy named Matthew Green told on me and it was all downhill from there, straight toward my mom’s unused bar of white Dove soap. But I digress.

After the third alarm clock slap, I regain consciousness and hurl myself into the purple dawn, shivering and searching for the house shoes on the cold wood floors. But once I’m up, safely in my sweat shirt and starting a big pot of coffee, I’m ok. And then the early morning, the cold house, the dim light streaming through the windows of our gray and white kitchen becomes downright cheerful.

I’m a morning person. It’s not that I enjoy getting up; I just enjoy myself once I’m at the breakfast table. Everyone else is still asleep, the neighborhood is quiet, and it’s just me and my thoughts. No rushing, no yelling or searching for keys or struggling down the driveway with a trash can as the garbage truck pulls away. No speeding or tossing the entire contents of the sock drawer onto the ground because I have approximately 38 seconds before I need to leave the house. I hate all that. And so I get up early. I suppose that makes me a morning person.

I need a buffer. I need to watch the sun come up on these cold December mornings, breathe the first smells of coffee, enjoy a stack of magazines, say a prayer of thanks, have a quiet conversation with God. It’s when I take a deep breath and enjoy my home before heading into a frantic work day. So this morning I took my time. I threw a bunch of pine cones into one of my favorite bowls and decided against my original plans of painting/glitterfying them for Christmas. I like their natural brown colors, they seems easier, a little less fluffy. I flipped through a Cath Kidston book for some office inspiration and ate my toast, wishing I could stay there all day.

But if I could stay at that table all day… it wouldn’t be the same. If I had hours and hours stretching out in front of me, perhaps these morning buffers wouldn’t be quite as special, quite as important. So instead of wishing for more, I’ll be grateful for the dawn’s peacefulness, grateful for raspberry jam toast, with a side of pine cones.

I am just like that...I hate the getting up part but once I'm there I enjoy it so much! You should join the 5:16 club with us...you know you want to!

Anyway...your morning sounds glorious! I hope your day is as well!!

That sounds like perfection! I would have to get up really early to be the first one up...my husband is the morning person around here. After having kids I found that my favorite quiet time was at night after everyone has gone to bed...it is my time to unwind and plan ahead for the next day. Love the "naked" pinecones in the bowl!

Sigh.
I will think on this post with awe and gratitude... you are lifting my spirits and giving me inspired insight. Lovely, lovely loveliness.

Good morning Liz ~ that sounds wonderful! I just can't seem to get my butt outta bed any earlier. Maybe going to bed before midnight might help. Too much painting and glittering to do!

I am a morning person too and I have trouble with the getting up part. I love the peace and quiet and I like to take my time before I jet off to work- where I spend all day wishing I was home.

....the best part of waking up, is Folgers in my cup! Remember that commercial. I always teared up when the one about the son coming home for Christmas. Anyhoo, I'm like you. I love the buffer period, so getting up isn't so bad once I've got the coffee going down. I like to be quiet, read something, say a prayer and THEN I am ready to start the breakfast and lunch making. Love the pinecones in the bowl....perfect.

I'm not morning people, although I do a good job at "pretending" that I am. I love to have a cup of coffee and listen to my Christmas carols playing in the background, while I read some of my favorite blog sites.
It starts my day off with a smile.
But I'll be honest...I wish it started at 9:00, as opposed to 5:30, but I digress.;)

Happy Holidays, Liz!
God Bless,
Amy:)

This is a nice reminder to enjoy what we have instead of wishing for something different. I often dream of the days when I'll be able to stay home during the day and I say to myself "I'll be happy when...". The future holds no promises, so happiness is only guaranteed for the moment. I'll enjoy today.

Kitchen Vixen said...

I'm like you- hitting the alarm clock multiple times, but I'm happy to be up once I'm out of bed. I'm trying to get into the habit of eating breakfast at home.

Katy said...

I understand what you mean about getting up all by yourself, it is a nice time of reflection. I always say that I'll get up before everyone, but it just doesn't happen. I need to make it happen b/c I don't like the rush and hurry in the morn.
I usually eat breakfast after the kids, sometimes several hours after that. Like, it's 9:00 and I haven't eaten yet. Oh, man ...better go get my shower while baby naps. B can watch her show or play w/ her dolls.
Have a great day Liz.

I like the pinecones just the way they are too. And that bowl is adorable!

THE Stephanie said...

So peaceful. I wish for those mornings... but I'm thankful, too, for my rushed mornings of chasing after my children yelling, "did you brush your teeth?" "put your shoes on!" "I love you!" "Have a great day at school!"

Either way, it's great to thankful!

Have a wonderful day!

Jerrie said...

lovely post. I too get up early, a little earlier than I have to so I have a few minutes, usually like 15, before I have to wake my son up to begin the day. I really enjoy my few minutes to adjust to the day before it begins!

Happy Wednesday!

I know what you mean about not spoiling the things that keep you sane. I do that, too.

I like the pinecones bare - and at least yours aren't all sappy like ours are. Maddie picked one up and I had to use nail polish remover to get the goo off her hands. Yuck!

I wish I had the energy to get up early - I always want to, but the bed lulls me back to sleep.

(PS - I am doing my first giveaway - come check it out!)

I just love how your coffee is just a little pale. It's so much prettier that way. And yummier.

Sharon said...

I love, love, love my mornings too! I like to turn on the cozy lights, get my coffee in a cute mug of course, tidy my home, light a candle, turn on my pretty instrumental music and read my Bible and pray. Then I go through my to do lists and my inspiration notebooks. I also check my blog of course! These moments go by so quickly, but I always notice that on work days I am so good about getting all of that done, but on my days off I get so lazy and drag the whole routine out until 11:00 or something and I can't stand that! I'm a crazy woman!

Hugs, Sharon

P.S. I call those secondary swear words "tough" words and always said that to my kids. I wouldn't allow them to say any tough words like crap, piss, sucks, etc. until they were in middle school and they could only say them in moderation preferably at school where they had the deep desire to fit in with all the other tough talkers! I remember I was so strict, they couldn't even say "butt" until 6th grade! Oh well, they seemed to turn out pretty good!

:0)

Good Morning Liz,
I too am a morning person, but only by your terms ... after crawling from the warmth of my comfy bed. :o) It takes a bit of effort to get from the barely awake moments to the kitchen for my coffee, but once I do, I am ready to go! :o) No lingering in the covers for me. :o)
Have a real nice day!
Sincerely ~ Tricia Anne

Liz, the pine cones are a great idea. I'm tempted to put a few in a basket on my table.

My grandmother had toast and jam every morning for breakfast. Your picture recalled to mind the image of my grandmother at breakfast. Thank you.

A very nice Wednesday to you.

I am up early too....my dogs make me! I do enjoy the solitude in the mornings though. It really is the most peaceful time of day!

Nicoleigh said...

Shoot. If I had a cute little table with a window by it, I think I might stay there all day too. But, since I don't, I must go to work.
And I too am trying to get up a little earlier these days. Oh, it is so hard! I don't enjoy having to be rushed...especially when it's snowing outside. I prefer to have a little cushion between parking my vehicle, walking to the office, and 8am.
I hope you continue to have your great morning start!

Jennifer said...

I'm the same way in the morning. After the initial greeting the dogs, pottying the dogs, feeding the dogs frenzy, I settle down with a hot cup of tea and some morning reading. Sets me up for the rest of the day.

And YES on the naturalness of the pine cones. Love them.

BTW, cute kitchen!

I sometimes push the snooze for 30minutes and don't even realize I'm doing it. So not good for getting your kids up and ready for school:) Once I'm up I good and chatty, which does not go over very well with my husband. I'm more of a night person. Once my girls go to bed and the house is quiet, I am at peace.

Those are really great things to be thankful for. I'm exactly the same way. ♥I cherish my early mornings and I'm thankful that I like to get up early♥ It gives me a few quiet moments to myself. You just can't put a price on that, not even 15 more minutes in bed ☺

Love your pinecones, btw! I agree they're the most beautiful in their natural state.

Have a happy Hump Day! ☺

It is hysterical that you just posted about your morning because that was my post today too!!!! Though, of a little different nature...you'll just have to come visit to see what I mean.

I just bought a bag of cinnamon and pine scented cones last night from JoAnn...I intended to glitter them too but your point about leaving them "natural" [as much as can be now that they are scented] is a good one. Hmmmm.....

Here's to the morning people. I LOVE my mornings. My husband leaves for work so early and I get up with him. By the time he's gone, the girls are still fast asleep and I have a good hour to sip my coffee, read my World magazine or catch up on some correspondence.

Ah, pinecones. I miss pinecones.

Hey Liz Oh, that sounds so peaceful. I wish i could do that,, but i just keep smacking the alarm clock until I AM literally running around the house and getting my son up and running to the truck. It doesnt make for a good morning but old habits die hard. I'm the one that's up to almost midnight every night,, that's MY (all mine I tell ya) time. I love your writing, I would love to be able to write like that. I nearly pulled my hair out helping my son write an essay... oh well guess we can't have it all.. Have a good day!!

My favorite bad word which really isn't bad at all but still means something bad is "oh flippers" and from my youth you could hear me mutter "bass fish" too which was when I was really angry with someone.

Regarding sleeping. I find that if I am asleep by 10pm than I wake up without an alarm clock around 6am. That could totally be just me but if I stay awake past 10pm then I get my 2nd wind and it takes forever to fall asleep.

Hurry up and become the famous author that you are going to be so that you can have your entire day in front of you just to write or look at Cath Kidston all day. There truly is nothing like it in the world. I feel grateful every day.

Stephanie said...

You said it perfectly and I agree. I hate, hate, hate getting up early and snooze my alarm eight times every morning (my husband loves that), but once I'm up and it's early and peaceful and nobody's buggin' me... I'm happy as a clam.

Besides, I love me a good afternoon nap.

I too am a morning person. Now my daughters are grown up. My husband goes to work. And I have a silent kitchen, me and the pets. I live in the Piney Woods of East Texas, so let me tell you, there are lots of pine cones in my yard! Should you ever pass through, I will give you all you want! You are likely right, if we could indulge ourselves all day, it wouldn't be the same. It is the "chance" sit-downs that are special.
