Sofa Makeover (Mabel, You Lose)

The definition of wallow: “to roll oneself about in a lazy, relaxed, or ungainly manner.”

Anyone that’s been reading this blog for very long has heard me bemoan the epic battle of the couch. My couch, AKA: The Green Beast, has been squished within an inch of her life. The back cushions are virtually pulverized, and every inch of fabric bears the aroma ‘a la Mabel’s butt.’ You can understand why I’ve been at the end of my rope.

But sadly, once I reached the end of my rope I discovered there was not enough money in the family purse for a new couch. And the vintage, retro one I’ve been hoping to stumble upon in a thrift store has yet to appear. SO… my sainted mother-in-law Linda swooped in to help.

First, we bought (and when I say we, I mean Linda) a two piece stretchy slipcover from Target. I cannot say enough good things about this stretch material. It really doesn't shift or wrinkle like a lot of other slipcovers I've had. Plus, the separate slipcover piece for the seat cushions really keeps things in place.

Then we did away with the horrendous back cushions and bought some new pillows at Joanne’s. Linda made some fun pillow cases for them using the red pattern fabric on the two outer pillows and plain duck cloth on two center pillows (in the first picture I have a red throw over the center pillows).

But if I want an entirely neutral couch, the red patterned pillows flip over and match the center pillows.

So there you have it. The new sofa makeover. And in case you’re thinking, “Um, Mabel is just going to do the same thing to those pillows,” you’re right. But when I leave the house now, I flip the cushions up. It’s a veritable “Wall of China” for dogs. She stands in front of the couch and her little schnauzer eyebrows bend into a frown. And I giggle and say, “Mabel… you LOSE!”
*** A few of you have asked what kind of camera I use. Matt actually just gave me my Christmas present early, a Sony Cybershot H-10. It is a small camera (which is what I really wanted since I haul a camera everywhere I go), but so far takes some great pictures. DO NOT take the pictures in this post into consideration, I was playing with shutterspeed settings and these turned out oddly blurry.

The couch looks great!! I am actually going through the same thing right now with my dog, the only difference with her and Mabel is that Chloe likes to chew so know I am going to be making a slipcover for my sofa. Mabel is so cute!!

That looks fabulous. In time Mabel may figure out how to get comfortable on it. Does she have a soft squishy bed? I'm sure she does.

Love it! I have OLD hand-me-down couches (well...almost all my furniture) and they happen to be very...um...striking (nice word). Maybe a trip to Target is in order. I tried other slip covers - but the stretchy looks awesome!

I bet given enough time Mabel will find a way up on that couch...Good luck Mabel!

Linda and you did a wonderful job on that sofa makeover! I love the red fabric and large pillows. It has been one of those days at my house, so hopefully I may have some Christmas decor by the weekend! Just a hint your earlier post about everything happening in Dec. Well it happened again today!

The Mabel wallowing picture at the top of the post is hilarious!! That's exactly how I feel today! Wallow on, Mabel!!

PS. I LOVE your sofa makeover! Wish my slipcover attempt has turned out so well!

Those stretchy covers are magic! I had one for a chair and it was awesome.

The sofa looks GREAT!

Poor Mabel....Where does she nap now if not on the top of the sofa?

Denise K. said...

What great ideas and your couch looks fantastic! :-) You could always take off these cushions when you leave for work and put Mabel's favorite pillows up... then when you get home put your "pretties" back up! We too have dogs and struggle with beauty and dog hair! hee hee

oh, it's like we're living parallel lives... except I don't have a job or a husband or a mother-in-law who can sew. But the dog on the back of the couch thing... we could be twins. :)

LOVE the couch makeover. I don't need a couch makeover but it makes me want to go buy a stretchy slipcover anyway. :)

That fabric IS great. I used it to cover my favorite recliner to change a blue chair to brown. It almost never needs readjusting and I sit in it every day. Did you at least give Mabel one of the old pillows to remember her old days of wallowing?

That first picture made me (momentarily) consider the need to add a schnauzer to our family. Luckily, as soon as I had that thought, a 65 pound lab puppy came crashing into me with his squeaky ball demanding play time. Nope. Two dogs is enough!

And why would you want neutral? Red, red, red!
Great job, Linda!

Amy said...

It looks beautiful, Liz!:)

And if you ever come to Crazyville to visit...I know that you will be very understanding towards the aroma surrounding my couches..."a la Allie's butt.";)

And if Linda runs out of projects to do...tell her to swoop on over to Crazyville and call me.;)

God Bless,
Amy:)

Awesome couch makeover! I can't tell you how many times I did this until we finally (we meaning my lovely mother and father as a Christmas present to me and dh) bought a new one. Now, I'm thinking I should have waited until Isaiah is 10, because the new couch looks old. ARGH! I also feel your pain regarding the furr-baby on the couch. My big fat black lab loves to call our couch her "throne" while were gone...she sits up there like she's Queen Sheba. When I walk in the door, she immediately knows she's in "BIG TROUBLE"!! (that's what I usualy yell at her). Yes, the battle of the couch is a long and painful battle. I love your "new" one!

Did she wash the duck cloth before she used it? My Mom and I used it in an upholstery project and I thought it was really stiff. I can’t imagine sewing with it. The couch turned out really nice by the way. I wish I could do something like that to my husband’s hand-me down. It is the ugliest leather couch you have ever seen. The only reason it’s still here is 1. I couldn’t lift it over the balcony when we had an apartment and 2. I promised it could go in his maniverse.

I love the red/cranberry colour. Having a Schnauzer of my own makes me think that Mable will find a way. Maggi is particularly adept at digging her nose under the edge of the cushion and then flipping it over her back with a look of "Nice try, Mom." on her misleadingly angelic face.

*1* OH MY GOSH!!!!! I LOVE the new couch look and new cushions and pillows and WOW you have the greatest mother in law [so jealous]!!!! "hilltopper" is so right...I want a Linda for Christmas.

*2* I don't feel bad for Mabel, even though she is an adorable dog I don't believe pets belong on furniture. Ok, someone will hate me for saying that. But alas, it's the way I feel.

*3* Great camera and AWESOME husband to get you such a sweet gift! I need to get a point and shoot too so I stop taking my $3,000 pro body everywhere like Target and flea markets and out on drives where it could get seriously broken and jeapordize my wedding jobs. Let me know how much you like the Sony in about a month so I know if I should look at it. Of course being a Canon girl I had been looking at their point and shoots.

*4* Glad you liked the award, it's well deserved and YES, Chloe is ADORABLE! I LOVE her! [But I am also glad she isn't mine, I break out in mumps at the thought.] And...yeah, business is BOOMING. I need to hire a secretary or personal assistant to help.

I always wondered how those stretchy slipcovers worked. Back in the day, I had an awful couch in my college apartment. I tried several slipcovers, and they always came loose. I guess slipcover technology has come a long way in the last decade or so!

Hey, these are sharp season appropriate pillows. I can see you all sipping a hot cup of peppermint coco on the couch just knowing if the cover got a share of it with a splash, no worries. Very family appropriate, and I just favor the fact that slip covers can change the entire feel of the room with very little cost....

Our Shelby finally quite getting on the couch cushions but only because "the rhuematiz" keeps her from jumping up now. Thankfully, Izzie never learned to do it so she is content with hoarding rawhide chews under the breakfast table chair legs or both of them nesting together on this huge 24" square box pillow I got at Tuesday Morning that sits in front of the fireplace - best seat in the house.

But aren't you glad at least schnauzers don't shed?

Mabel is a cutie - too bad she and my girls can't have a play date. How old is she? Mine are 12 and 3, yin and yang they should be called.
