When I spotted this curbside puke-hued orphan on the side of the road, I couldn't help myself. I shoved it into the backseat of my little car and carted it home.

Matt eyeballed it suspiciously and said, "That's the ugliest chair I've ever seen."
I pretended to cover its ears and said, "Shhh... you'll hurt his feelings."
Perhaps it's because of my soft spot for anything reminiscent of my grandparents house. Or Archie Bunker's chair. Or come to think of it... Red's chair from That 70's Show.

Or maybe it's just that I'm cheap and the idea of a free comfy reading chair for my office was too much to turn down, no matter how badly it needs to be reupholstered.
Whatever the reason, this stray chair found a new home.

Love it!!!
My hubs and I found an old teal chairs once and brought it home. We named it Ugly Chair and kept it for years!!!!
His cushion looks a little sad and sloping... maybe you could add some new puff and a pretty throw pillow too. Men! Pffttt... what do they know about chairs and their feelings.

Oh, just please tell me it doesn't smell!
I would have brought it home too...as long as it didn't smell. Did you read my story yesterday about the big ugly armoire I tucked in the back of my yaris, by myself?
ugly chairs need love too!
Love the old chair. Even if it is in a pukeish sort of hue. I have to agree with Julie, that I hope it doesn't smell.
Can't wait to see it when you redo it. Do you have anything in mind already?
I love it!!! But I do agree that the color is a little wild!!! Good thing it's comfy!
Hugz,
Michele
NoNo Matt. This is brilliance. It must stay. It must live and be loved and you will grow fond of it. Say no more.
Ya know, I totally wouldn't reupholster it. It just seems to be telling a story. And that ruffle at the bottom is about as homey as you can get. I LOVE IT!

Did it get the "sniff" test out on the side of the road??? I think it looks really cute where you have it!
Too cute!
It's not so bad, maybe with the right recovering, or throw for the time being Matt could learn to love it too ;)
take care,
Lisa
Y'know, usually I can see your vision for the strays. Not this time. I'm with Matt. Ugly beyond redemption. Also: lice, fleas, bedbugs, kids who pee on things, cats who pee on things, old incontinent men.
If I don't know the history of an upholstered piece, I'm not risking any of those things.
My inlaws have a pair of similar chairs in their basement, only the upholstery is a gold velour. LOL For years they kept trying to pawns those babies off on us. You can have them. ;) heehee
It does remind me of Red Foreman! ha!
My husband would do the same thing. ;) Bring me home something off the side of the road ;)
You seem to have good luck with that so far!
Liz, your blog frustrates me so much!!! I don't know why, but I can't ever post comments on entries unless they already have a comment posted. I don't know if that makes sense, but unless there are already comments posted, I see no link to click on to post a comment. I am just being incredibly dense?
Anyway, wanted to post this on your winner of book entry and say, pooh, I meant to enter that contest. I'm all the way over here in Istanbul without a bloody thing to read. I've always been a literature snob, but somehow lately have lowered my standards and see that there is some merit to be found in these low-brow novels-- they're actually a lot of fun to read. It also inspires me to write my own novel as I realize that it doesn't have to be a work of genius.
I LOVED your short story by the way-- it's magical and captures the romance of that generation. It's fun to see you family photos as well. Keep writing, dear girl!
Mrs. Brady called and she wants her chair back. :) Did anyone see you put it in your car? Oh, I wish I could have seen that! heehee...
The first time you sit in it and look at your favorite magazine you will come to appreciate it!
It has good bones. Are you planning to recover it?
You know, Liz, you've outdone yourself on this one. Usually, I think, "Wow! She has the cutest style." I'm afraid I can't go there on this one. My immediate reaction was - ICK! Sorry to say. It does remind me of my great-grandmother's musty old farmhouse. ICK!
In a funny way it almost seems to match...enjoy and fall asleep in your comfy chair!

I love your stories about picking up stray furniture. I wish I had your eye... FABULOUS!
I love the lines on it!
It is cute. Kinda. ;-)
I'm weird about germs and ickiness though, so I'd want a slipcover on it just for that reason! (My mind wanders to all the liquids and bodily fluids that have been on the chair over the years.)
sweet - he looks happy to have a nice new home
I WON I WON I WON I WON!!!!
I'm so in the mood for mindless romance, too :) You have no idea how much I wish you could deliver it in person and we could sit around for a whole weekend talking about silly romance novels and eating food that shouldn't be allowed to touch my lips. But getting in the mail will do just as nicely. :)
Love, your non-sister-sister
[chair looks adorable there]
Awwww..... I think it's cute! I'm glad you gave a home Liz :)
hugs,
rue
i totally would've done the same thing!
you will fix him up nice and it will be the happiest chair in the world!
Oh I love that chair! And yes, it does look like something Red would sit in! Ummmm, did ya shampoo it at least?!
I have brough home a few strays to. Put a little slipcover over that guy and he will be just great. I remember putting a piece of fence in my car one time with my daughter wondering if anybody was looking. Jackie
I watched the movie Revolutionary Road tonight...and thought of you. No, not the content. It was brutal and I am not sure I'd recommend it from that point of view.......
but the furniture. So very midcentury modern in the style you seem to love. Wished you were there so we could have ooohed and aaahed together :-)
It looks pretty clean for a curbside orphan... I suppose you probably cleansed it of it's prior owner before brining it inside. I like the shape of it- it really does look cozy, especially next to a window in the sunshine.
That chair is beautiful. And it has found a soul mate in that awesome blue hutch that you painted.
my husband spotted a chair on the curb one time. he was going to haul it up to his apartment but decided to sit in it and test it out first. that's when a RAT crawled out and ran across his lap. AH!! free curb side furniture can be awesome but you have to be careful. :)
Rather fond of that chair!
I think it screams: Sit in me and read all day! Which I love.
That chair needs a name! Love the shape, the price & the location. Now the fabric? Well I have seen worse!
ha I love it I am seating on the ugliest chair my family hates it but I love it! Harvest gold an all
I love the shape and form of that chair! Is it comfortable? I can envision it in a toile or linen print.
It screams Febreeze!
But I have a soft spot for grandpa chairs as well.
Please re-upholsterer it soon and then show us the transformation! Until then, I shall call her "Cinderella~"
I agree it has great bones, I just had to much orangish in the 7o's and 80's, so I would throw a good ol' quilt over it. BUt, I know that color is really coming back in style, the earthy movement!
Well, I do happen to have a couple of vintage quilts in my etsy shoppe but I would have grabbed it also! Geeze, I have been know to do that too! If it is curbside and near trash day, who cares!
Smiles, cyndi
