Foodie Bliss and Happy Cats

Whenever we escape to Lynn's river house, it's peaceful. Peaceful is the one and only word that adequately describes it. The river moves silently below her house, birds sing overhead, and there's no shortage of benches in the shade.

We had wonderful cherries. Oh the cherries. And while I was eating them and discarding the seeds (which ALWAYS makes me think of the Witches of Eastwick), I realized it is no longer spring. It's summer.

Lynn is a woman after my own heart for so many reasons. One of which; this aqua Adirondack chair on the patio.

Another thing you'll always find at Lynn's house: happy cats. Here's Clancy, basking in the window and eyeing the yard for birds while the locust swarmed above in the trees.

We perched under this umbrella and sipped coffee, watching the deep green river swirl as I restrained myself from rubbing this fantastic smelling lemon thyme all over my neck. Why don't they make perfume that smells like THAT? Lemon thyme perfume I would buy.

Miss Amelia is one of the happy cats that belong to Lynn. Or rather, I think Lynn belongs to them. These pictures were taken amid a flurry of meow's; all of which were meant to instruct me to scratch her head. She's quite the talker, this one.

Another thing Lynn and I share in common; a love of aqua pottery and bowls.

More fresh fruit. It's definitely summer.

And the cats were always there to remind us to rest. Relax. Take it easy.

See what I mean?

Matt cooked the lunch shift with his cedar planked salmon.

My very own chef.

And as if that weren't enough, we had roasted garlic on french bread.

The thing I love most about Lynn' s house is that it just feels happy. From the moment you step through the front door... you know a cheerful lady lives there. A cheerful lady with fantastic taste in sofas.

And lamps.

Lynn took the dinner shift and made Chicken Marsala. There were no words to describe it, so I wont even try. What a fantastic meal.

She also made fennel, something I had never had before. Somewhere in the middle of dinner I looked at her and said, "This would be my death row meal request."

So what was my contribution to all this cooking you ask? Peach tarts. What else. Except this time we added mint, vanilla and the teeny tiniest smidgen of cayenne pepper (Lynn's suggestion).

Oh yeah, and I did the dishes. I may not be a foodie, but I can clean like the wind.

So thank you Lynn! Thank you for inviting us into your tranquil little slice of paradise.

And thanks to your happy cats for reminding us how to relax.

You described the perfect time - lovely company, great food and peace (with many beautiful things around you to see, touch and enjoy) - yep - all that and roasted garlic too!

I love all the things that animals remind us of. They are way smarter than us....most of the time.

I sighed and relaxed while reading. And, I agree... there's nothing like a happy cat to remind you to relax.

i need comfort, food and fun

No one relaxes better than a cat. I'm writing this at my parents house, where their three cats are in various states of repose and looking perfectly blissful in their respective patches of sunshine. I think I'll take a cue from them and go to the pool this afternoon since I'm mostly unemployed.

Some friends aren't friends. They're parts of your soul. Liz and Matt are that for me. At more than one point during the weekend (after about the umpty-millionth time that Liz voiced a personal feeling that was a thought already built into my soul) I wanted to know whether they could just come up every weekend. I can't even imagine a more perfect time, or two more perfect people to share it with. I love you guys!!!! And so do Clancy, Amelia and Moe. xoxo Lynn

Dear Liz,
I just got home from vacation, and have been catching up on the latest posts from "Mabel's House". I know this is a little late, but I just couldn't help myself! Your post on Jon and Kate is sooo right on! Thanks for putting into words the conclusions many people have come to in the recent months. I say BRAVO to you and everyone who commented! I have been thinking for a long time that the show Jon and Kate, (I can hardly mention the "and 8"), have gone way too far over the fine line of decent entertainment! The obvious exploitation of these innocent children has just become so apparent. It truly sickens me. Decent people need to take a stand and boycott this TV program. Watching the selfish behavior of these parents is more than I can stand. Worse is their ridculous explanations of how, "they do everything for the welfare of their children". Do they think people are stupid enough to believe that? My heart goes out to these sweet children. They in my opinion, will need much more than a college fund. How about money for years of therapy!
Thanks Liz for being the voice for so many of us!
I love your blog. Maybe someday I will start one myself!
Sincerely,
Darlene
PS I apoligize for being so late with this comment!

You are so blessed. I wish I had a Lynn friend; and I wish I had a husband who was a chef...or rather, I wish my husband could cook. ;-)

Lynn's place looks dreamy, and Lynn sounds like the hostess with the mostess.
