Thanks for all your praise for my yard. Some of you even referred to my having a 'green thumb.' I can assure you that's not the case. I simply chalk it up to the fact that after three straight years of planting things in a barren yard, eventually, some things were bound to start growing. And since we're all in the summer-time flower state of mind, I thought I'd post pictures of a true 'green thumb.' The woman on the right is my great-aunt Lib. Another Elizabeth in the family tree. Shocker.
This was her garden. Or part of it. Mom says it was immaculate, with paths between bushes and flowers and climbing roses.
And how about Lib's get-up? How about her hat? Fur stole? I'll tell you what I wear in my yard. Too-tight shorts (thanks a lot York Peppermint Patties), flip flips from the 8th grade and old t-shirts. Something tells me Aunt Lib would not approve.

Here she is again in a garden. She's in front on the left. My mother calls posing for pictures like this "cheesing it up." Genetics are a powerful thing, are they not? Apparently, cheesing it up for photographs is hereditary in our family. Green thumbs, not so much.
And here's Aunt Lib again. She's the one with a black mark across her chest... why did people do those things to pictures? I'm not sure if this was her house, but how about those climbing roses? The ivy? The sweeping front steps? Sigh.
Aunt Lib was a true green thumb. I, on the other hand, am more of a gray thumb. Not green, not black, just somewhere in between. Maybe it would help if I wore a dress and fur stole to work in the yard?
Nah.

That is some garden. I don't think I'll ever have the patience for that - and it's much to hot for fur. Your Aunt Lib sounded like a fabulous and fun lady.
And by the way - what's with the man covering that woman's mouth? It made me laugh! (o:
I am so glad I did not live back then, as those dresses would suffocate me! I cannot wear anything fitted or tight. Ugh.
And I have a black thumb. It was just a matter of time until I killed my hanging tomato plant. It's good and dead now. I give up.
I went out to water plants on the patio yesterday and was pouring sweat in shorts, t, and flips so I would have passed out with the fur and all of the other dress. It was almost 100 here yesterday, so those outfits would be out of the question green thumb or not. Love the pictures, and those flowers must have been amazing! Have a wonderful weekend. Jackie
Fur stole or not, I find that dresses help me garden much more effectively. You know, it helps me feel like I'm at least playing the part. Otherwise? I'm hopeless.
Now you've got me thinking that I must have a gardening get-up. Not so sure about the stole, but maybe I should give more consideration to what I'm wearing out there. I mean, really. It's part of the preparation, right? Maybe if the plants see me looking like I'm taking this gardening stuff seriously, they'll start acting like they're being gardened (hmmm, that's a word, no red dotted line).
Have a happy, flowering weekend!
Your aunt is so stunning all dressed up like that, back when having a photograph taken was an 'event'.
No green thumb here either.

Liz -
What is with the guy in the last photo trying to "stifle" the woman on the left?
What I know of you and your sisters thru what I have read....
any man like that would now be dead
:^)
Great photos. I think I need a gardening dress...putting that on my list! :)
I couldn't have worn all of that either - how did they breathe? My thumb is definitely black! My friend gave me one of those bamboo plants for my Bday with a note that says, "How long will it take you to kill me? ... kidding, an impossible plant to kill" Um, yeah I've already killed one of those and all they do is sit in a glass of water - they don't even need dirt!
Those are wonderful photos! I can't imaging wearing all those clothes except maybe in the dead of winter right after a cold front! My summer at home uniform is tank top, athletic shorts and crocs! I just came in from trimming my shell vine, watering and pulling some weeds. It is getting too hot to stay out for long!
Blessings,
Lorilee
I am not quite sure how I made my way over to your blog, but I am sure glad I did. I have been laughing out loud-excuse me spelling it out, for the past 15 minutes...you are too funny.
I don't know. If you did, it would make for some grate cheesey pics
I do agree - you have a fab yard! I have no patience when it comes to gardening (sad, really). I've missed your blog.....it's like a bright ray of sunshine...Happy!
I love those old photos!
Your flower pics are so pretty! Just wanted to let you know I linked your blog today! Check it out:

I have a black thumb...I can kill anything so it impresses me at everything you grow! Those old pictures are too cool...I'm so jealous as I've said before! Can you imagine how hot it was in the garden in all those clothes?!
I can't imagine dressing so formally for everyday life! I went to my family reunion last Sunday, and we were looking at pictures of family from around the same time period. I noticed that one man and woman who were working outside (they were carrying buckets on a farm) were dressed up. He was wearing a tie, and she had on a white fancy shirt, skirt, and heels. Times have definitely changed!
Never mind the green/black thumbs, I'm with everyone wanting to know about the man's hand over the one lady's mouth. It looks like they are trying not to laugh. I bet it would make for a good story! I had to zoom in to get a closer look on that one!
Thanks for sharing the fabulous family pics!
Truth be told, I have gardened in my bikini (BEFORE I had a child), so I'm pretty sure my garden would have DIED if I had to wear those dresses. No thanks.
In that first pic, is her dress...polka-dotted???!!!
Cool. People really knew how to dress.
whats up with the guy having his hand over that girls mouth in the last photo?!? That's hilarious!
Well, whether your thumb is green, black or gray, your yard is beautiful! Hope you have a great weekend!
You never mentioned what the man on the left is doing to the woman in front of him. That's a very funny picture!
Hugs,
Cathie
Your old photos are absolutely amazing!
I adore your family photos! They are FABULOUS! But, I don;t know how they stood the heat, It is 100.5 here in Alabama at 6PM today. I even had to close the curtains and I hate to do that. Kudo's to your aunt for her beautiful gardens and I would love to see here undergarments also. I love that attire and era!
Smiles, Cyndi
That's it! That's why I can only cultivate twigs. I need to dress the part. Sorted.
