We had a shrimp boil dinner with friends. No, we're not in Louisiana. But we're close enough in global proximity that Matt thought he'd take a swipe at it.

I'd never been a participant in a shrimp boil before. The concept of throwing shrimp, sausage, crab, potatoes, fresh veggies and hotter-than-you-know-what spices in one giant pot and cooking them together sounded weird to me. Chalk it up to my hillbilly heritage, but I was suspicious.
But that suspicion began to wane as Matt piled the food high in bowls and the spicy aroma filled the house. Those cajuns really know what they're doing.
I decided that a shrimp boil might be OK after all.

Mabel, on the other hand, finessed her "dart out from under the table to check for food" method of begging. It's one part crafty (guests always feel sorry for her) and one part preservation (the table shields her from the risk of being stepped on during parties in our small house).
In the end it was delish. Good summer dinner.
Fun times with friends.

And one seriously sulky schnauzer who didn't get even the tiniest bite of spicy shrimp. That would have been a Pandora's box of doggy puke I wasn't about to open.

One of my favorite summer meals though I rarely make it.
that looks like a mighty fine dinner. and who made the corn bread...looks yummy?
I am like you. It seems weird. But it looks wonderful and I'd definitely give it a try if someone else made it :)
Oh YUM!!
Yum. I've been wanting to try a shrimp boil. I think it would be an easy and fun way to host a summer dinner. Was it?
We cooked a shrimp boil for fathers day. It has always been one of my favorite summer time meals. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Mabel looks so cute pouting!
Oh that sounds like HEAVEN....please send Matt our way.....PALEESE!!!!
Poor little Mabel....maybe she got a doggy treat instead???
I love fun with friends in the summer. Pretty much my favorite thing. Wish we were neighbors and I could scream over the fence for Matt to hurry up and cook the tenderloin so we could sit around a fire and play cards.
That is one of our favorite meals. Here in Savannah, Ga. we call that a low country boil. Just over the state line in South Carolina it is called Frogmore Stew. No matter what you call it....it is yummy. I agree...not so good for 4 legged children. My 3 beg...but they end up as unhappy as Mabel. I'm new to blogging and have enjoyed reading your blog!
Oooh, the cornbread and rice look DELISH!!
Yay, Matt! You should try jambalaya, my FAV.OR.ITE thing to eat ever!!! (I'm from Louisiana!) The recipe is on my blog...
Do you want to know how I can tell you are not authentic cajuns?
Because you used plates.
Oh, poor poor Mabel.
I love me some cajun food eaten with good friends.
Oh ya... our Missy is quite gurdy and no way do I ever give her anything with spice on it... bland minute rice is on HER menu!

You'd only need to add some crawfish in there and you'd be true cajuns. My husband's fam is all from Louisiana- can't say I enjoy peeling and eating those yucky old "mud bugs" as they call them myself, but I'll take the shrimp, corn, and potatoes any day!
mmmm, sounds so good and looks good!
I've never heard of a shrimp boil up here in Wisconsin. We have fish boils, but they are not spicy. I would love to try the shrimp boil. Can you tell us what's in it and how you made it?
Your meal looks delicious. X
oh. yummmmm!
Looks like something we need to try when "the boys" come home from the hospital. I can't wait to get back to cooking!!!
o.k., now that looks too good.
xo
Matt sounds so much like my husband, and if this is the case we are both lucky girls! The kitchen is not foreign to me, but my guy is incredibly talented and I'm just fine with that! It looks like you had a great night :)
That meal looks amazing! I would it if you posted all the recipes!! I had never heard of a Shrimp Boil before!
that looks yummy. poor, poor, mabel.
Sounds yummy...looks even better! Poor Mabel...but Bear goes through the same thing...he'll stand right by my legs cuz he knows Momma will give in and let him have a taste!!!

That meal looks absolutely delicious! I love the picture of Mabel sulking!
I've never tried that before, but it sure looks yummy!
Pandora's box of doggie puke. What an awesome image.
So I need a post from Matt telling me how to do this...I think we'd love it!
I crack me up...I noticed the brandy and cognac right off the bat!
pics are lovely. i have the hardest time taking pics of food.
You guys look like you do some good eatin' at your house. What times dinner? Reminds me of Frogmore Stew that Grandma used to make growing up. Yum!
We do this after making crabs in the water. It's the best!
Pretty Please, post the recipe or just the steps and seasonings.
