A Wedding Photo Question

I received an email last week asking me if the wedding photo in my short story was real. And the answer is yes. The story itself is fiction, but there is an actual Japanese wedding photo in existence.

My grandfather brought this picture back from the Pacific after serving in WWII.

He found it in a deserted shack on one of the tiny islands in the Pacific (no doubt where Japanese plane spotters lived). Anyway, it's always seemed like such a sad photo to me. No doubt something must have happened to the groom to make him leave behind his wedding photo. I've always wanted to incorporate that into a story. Hence, the title.

Thanks for all the questions and emails you've sent me about my little short story. It's been great encouragement and yes, I'm still working on the sequel.

I just love that bookcase. Love it. And the typewriter.

The bookcase and those photos perched just so on top of it are perfect!

The Japenese wedding photography is such an unusual and special photograph to have.

That's so awesome, I wish my grandparents had such a great range of old photos! I wonder who the Japanese couple were - it's weird to think that their children or their children's children might be out there somewhere completely unaware that you possess such a wonderful family photo. Keep it safe for them!

I can’t tell you how much I love looking at the photos you share. There is just something about portraits taken from that time. I love the one with your grandmother holding your grandfather’s military picture. I don’t know why, but when I saw it, it just stuck in my head. It’s pretty cool too that your grandfather thought enough to bring back the Japanese wedding picture and save it. I’m sure a lot of people wouldn’t have. I can tell that your family really values memories.

I do have to say thought that neither the bride nor groom look very happy.

What a great photo. And sad that the photo was left behind.

Your bookcase is so cute, it makes me want to paint everything aqua. :)

Can't wait to read more of your story!

The style of wedding photos has certainly changed throughout the years. They used to be so stodgy and serious. I have one where Hubby is peeking down the front of my dress.. hee hee.... bet they didn't do that in Japan now did they?

People always seemed sad in the old photos. Maybe they just didn't want to have to hold a smile for such a long time. *shrug*

Oh, I also meant to say that I have a photo from the war as well. One of my grandfathers sent my grandmother (they were just dating at the time) a grass skirt and something else from where he was stationed. There's a photo of her wearing it with a bikini top! Scandalous! LOL And the frame it's in was made by my grandfather...the wood he carved from wood that was where he was stationed, and the glass is from an aircraft windshield! Cool!

More than you wanted to know I'm sure, but that picture reminded me of this. I need to go find it...if my mother knew that I didn't know where it is right now, she'd have my head!

The history you know about your family is incredibly interesting. I really should take some time to learn more about my own.

When you first showed pictures of your new placement of your old typewriter I didn't really like it. But I love the little photos you've put on the keys, makes it blend in.

Wow that hits close to home when your own grandfather found one in war. What a treasure to have that photo because it teaches a powerful lesson! I like the way you wove it into your short story. I think war is sad because there are people just like you and me on the side we might call "enemy." ugggg!! just thinking about it makes me sick... I hate war!
