a. The giant front window had always stumped me.
b. I wanted curtains for Anthropologie so badly I could taste it.
c. I'm cheap.
And after I systematically eliminated every curtain, I shrugged my shoulders and headed into the bath section just for fun. It was at this particular juncture I stopped short and clasped my pearls. Well, not literally because when I shop at Target I'm usually sans makeup and wearing my ten year old AC/DC t-shirt, ragged 'spray paint' jeans and a pair of flip flops. But you know what I mean.
I spied these shower curtains. They were perfect! Except the whole shower curtain, only 72 inches long problem. So in a fit I bought them. Did I have the money for it? No. Why did I do it? Because as I stood under the mind-bending power of Target's fluorescent lighting, I realize that if I didn't do something now, I would have the same white curtains for the next three years.
On the advice of my mother-in-law, Saint Linda, I bought some matching brown fabric and stitch-witchery. I didn't even SEW, just measured, cut, and ironed the bottom panels on. Where has stitch-witchery been my whole life? I. Am. A. Fan.
So anyway, we officially have curtains. I know, I know.
"But Liz, you've mixed dark brown curtains with a light brown couch and a black table and chairs!"
Uh yeah. I did. That ship sailed long ago people. You know I'm not one for strict color rules. Or matching. Or planning.
So take that Anthropologie. I like my shower curtain curtains just fine.
Even if Mabel could care less.

They are fabulous. I've been needing six new cutain panels for five years but the expense and selection has had me keeping my off-white tab-top curtains in place. (Why are these tab-top curtains so ubiquitous?) Maybe I'll check the bath section soon. :)
I love them! I think they look wonderful and sounds like something I might need to look into, since I don't sew AT ALL either! Fantabulous!=)
one word...awesome!
I almost did the same thing last week- the shower curtains at Target are much cuter than their actually curtains. You've inspired me to go back- Good job, Liz!!
Love your post! Love your writing style! And most importantly, the curtains pull the room together GREAT! Thanks for sharing.
Shower curtains make awesome curtains. And skipping the Anthro mark-up really rocks. And your window-room looks good... you rocked it.
I used Target shower curtains in my sons' room... a deep blue with silver stars, like a milky way... it's a good and affordable fix.
You are so adorable! I don't follow the rules either but that's what makes it fun! Your new shower curtain curtains are fabulicious!
shhhh, the curtains in my son's room are shower curtains! even hanging on clear shower curtain rings! and no one, not even my most discerning, decorating friends, have ever noticed. that dwell studio line at target is about to send me over the edge!!!!!
This story sounds so much like my own shopping adventures. I'm happy to have a kindred spirit somewhere on the planet. Usually, I just horrify people, but I'm pretty sure you and I could shop happily together.
From one Frugalista to another, "WAY TO GO, GIRL!"
I think they are marvelous. I may have to see if they have anything for our living room in the bath section....
"the mind-bending power of Target's fluorescent lighting" Oh, I have felt it too. Wonderful post, great curtains!
Way to think outside the box! I've made curtains out of sheets before. If you like the fabric you just have to make it work. Totally great!
Giggled at the writing. OOuu'd and Ahhh'd at the genius of your new 'curtains'! LOVE.it!
They look great. I laughed as I read because I too was wanting the expensive Anthro curtains for my laundry room. I have purchased some substitutes from Target and am going to change them up with some yo-yos.
Hoping that my compromise turns out as nice as yours.
I LOVE THEM! Who cares what "experts" say - they are fabulous!!!! Good thinkin' Liz!
Absolutely gorgeous! You're my idol.
You don't know how many times I've thought of using shower curtains to make curtains for an odd window we have. Now I have the courage. Thanks for your post. You inspire me!
I would love to say that they are lovely, however my blog-nazi employer has blocked all blog images, so I will just have to trust you until I get home. I must say that Stitch Witchery has helped me create some amazing curtains in my home, I can't live without it! Also, I totally feel the power of the Target fluorescents, too.
I love them! Great job, Liz!
I'm happy to hear that you had the strength to 'stick it to' Anthropologie. Their prices on EVERYTHING are completely unreasonable. I shop cheap whenever possible. Your curtain choice is wonderful!

They are perfect! It is so much better to make your own unique things, and I think that way they match (or don't) is exactly right.
And why is it that every time you go to the store dressed the way you described, you always run into someone you know? But when you are all dressed up and looking nice, nothing?
They look wonderful - and you aren't the first to use shower curtains as regular curtains!! I think some shower curtains are prettier than regular ones!
Those curtains are CUUUTE. Great idea!
I think they are PERFECT. Great job!!
I've been noticing Target's pretty shower curtains for months now and thought they'd make really great curtains! Yay for no sewing! I discovered the stitchery when I was making curtains and my sewing machine broke. I'm not sure I'll ever go back now.
What are you talking about?? Honest to goodness, the first thing I thought when I looked at the pictures was that the colors looked great together.
Lookin'good, Liz.
I love them! They are fantastic!
I would totally do that in a heartbeat!
I did the same thing for my girls' bedroom. Their curtain is a shower curtain from Target as well. Although I didn't take the time to do anything to it. It is still one piece and the bottom is hidden by the dresser so it was a fast install.
These are totally fab! And you saved yourself a TON of cash. Way to go, lady.
I think they look great! If you hadn't said anything I never would have know they're shower curtains.
Love it! I honestly thought they were black from the photos until I read further. This is such a great idea, I may have to go look around Target now for my own "shower curtain curtains." You rock Liz.
That looks so good! I love it! It doesn't hurt that's my shower curtain that is in my bathroom!
Liz -
Great job!
My living room has a spicy, pumpkin orange on the walls with a black leather couch and brown curtains.
i love it that is for certain(s)
:^)
Tell those people who complain about brown that I say brown is a nice color! I got tons of brown. I love brown, it goes with everything. As I say this I happen to be wearing brown and sitting on my brown couch with my brown pillows propping me up. hehe
(and black and brown go just fine together, just ask my doggie who is both colors!)
I like the curtains. When I read the title I was thinking plastic curtains...
Why didn't I think of this before?! I love them! Totally anthropogyesque!
nicely done. I think Mabel is excited -- on the inside. She's just being demure about it.
I know what you mean about the lack of great curtains in the world....we ended up hanging tablecloths!
I love them too! So impressed. :)
Your curtains are absolutely fabulous! If you had never mentioned they were shower curtains and from Target...I would have never guessed. You used them well! Enjoy the blog and Miss Mabel as well!
Love your curtains!
The curtains looks great, and I am sure Mabel thinks so too. Jackie
Just as I suspected, they are awesome.
Looks great! I've thought of using shower curtains before but never tried it. You've inspired me. For some reason they make your dinning table look blacker... I actually really never noticed that it was black before because my eyes were always drawn to the red shutters but now the curtains makes the black table and chairs really stand out!
WOW....those look nothing like shower curtains...they turned out great!
They look tremendous. Wonderful job with them! StitchWitchery, whatever it is, sounds like it could be convenient!
Wonderful! We are furnishing a cottage in Cape Cod and I used gorgeous, bright, fun shower curtains from Target in one of the bedrooms.
wow these are fantastic! They really look great and you totally crack me up (in a good way).
PS thank you so much for commenting on my blog last week! I'm so sorry it has taken me a few days to get over to yours.
Awesome! Looks great!
Love them! I may have to start buying shower curtains from which to make some summer blouses and sunsdresses!
Beautiful! I really, really like your new curtains. They are perfect for your house. Great job being creative, too. There is a shower curtain at Target that I've been eyeing too to make into cafe curtains. I don't need new curtains, but it's so cute that I have trouble remembering that. :)
wow - your curtains are savage looking...great job
Love them!!! I have been sewing up a storm the last couple days with my drapes and I have also thrown matching out the window.
My husband was like "how many different colors and patterns are you going to have in that room" - all incredulous that it isn't going to work.
I figure I'm going for eclectic. Haphazardly throwing things I like together and hoping ti works out :)
LOOOOOOOOOOOOVE the curtains! love them :-)
oh yes, stitch which is DIVINE!!! Love that stuff!
Love the curtains! I had to do something similar in my bathroom. I wanted a fabric shower curtain with a plastic liner underneath. Something that wasn't flowery or a pattern, yet texture and cloth. I live in a very old house with high ceilings and nothing was long enough or way over budget. One day at Ross I found a really great, really large tablecloth on clearance...from Ross that's like a double -discount! It's perfect, it's long enough, it looks nicer then any expensive one and it cost me all of six bucks!
Love the shower curtain idea! I've used sheets for curtains too. They're a lot of fabric for less then buying it in a fabric store. You can do the no sew method for the tops and use the hem or ruffle that they're already trimmed with for the bottom.
Oh my, I've been wanting anthro curtians too and those target ones are perfect! you did an amazing job trolling!
I'm going to have to go visit le target.

Love Stitch Witchery. Love the curtains. Good job!
LOVE the shower curtain curtains! This is something I would do. I'm actually about to make a shower curtain out of a table cloth, because I couldn't find a shower curtain that I liked enough. You are fabulous :-)
i too have target shower curtain curtains MINUS the stitch-witchery!
and... i was just at Kmart the other day... saw in a tablecloth what i've been looking for in curtains... oh yeah.. tablecloth curtains are in my future :)
